When officers and other public officials are sued, and the Plaintiff (the one bringing the suit) wins, the officer or official is found LIABLE. This is similar to a verdict of guilt in a criminal trial. There are different types of liability. Depending on the type, the officer or official may or may not be personally responsible for financial damages.
